Edibles Dosing 101: Start Low, Go Slow, and Wait

Edibles are the easiest cannabis product to take too much of. A little planning makes them one of the most predictable.

Edibles are wonderful and quietly unforgiving. They last longer, feel different, and are gentler on your lungs than smoking — and they are also the single easiest way for a new user to have an uncomfortable night. Almost every bad edible story comes down to one avoidable mistake: taking more before the first dose kicked in.

Why edibles are different

When you smoke or vape, effects arrive within minutes and you can feel your way to the right amount. Edibles go through your digestive system and liver first, which does two things: it delays onset to somewhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours, and it converts THC into a form that is often more potent and longer-lasting. A smoking session might last an hour or two; an edible can last four to eight.

Standard doses in milligrams

Edibles are measured in milligrams (mg) of THC. A rough map for most people:

Read the package carefully: the important number is milligrams per piece, not per package. A "100 mg" chocolate bar is usually ten 10 mg squares.

A simple first-time plan

How long do edibles take to kick in?

Usually 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your metabolism, what you have eaten, and the product. This delay is why waiting before re-dosing is so important.

How much should a first-timer take?

A common starting point is 2.5 to 5 mg of THC. Many packaged edibles are 5 or 10 mg per piece, so beginners often take half a piece and wait.

Why do edibles feel stronger than smoking?

Your liver converts THC into a compound that is often more potent and longer-lasting than what you get from inhaling. That is why the same person can feel far more from 10 mg eaten than from a couple of puffs.

I took too much — is that dangerous?

It is very uncomfortable but not life-threatening. The effects fade with time. Stay in a calm, safe place, hydrate, and rest. If you are ever genuinely worried about someone's breathing or responsiveness, seek medical help.

How long do the effects last?

Typically 4 to 8 hours, with lingering effects sometimes into the next morning at higher doses — much longer than smoking or vaping.
