California Cannabis Taxes: What You Actually Pay
The price on the shelf is not the price at the register. Here is where the extra goes.
If you have ever wondered why a $40 eighth rings up closer to $52, the answer is layered taxes. Legal cannabis in California carries more of them than almost any other retail category.
The three layers
There is a statewide cannabis excise tax applied at retail, the ordinary state and district sales tax, and then a local cannabis tax that varies city by city. Stack them and the effective rate often lands between 25% and 38% depending on where you shop.
It is worth knowing before you budget an order — and it is one quiet reason delivery menus and in-store prices can feel out of step with the total you actually pay.
